I often call Jewel, My Jewel. Not because she’s mine, of course, she is held dearly by so many people. I call her My Jewel because on a week-to-week basis, she is my partner in wedding photography crime. Also because over the past year and a half of knowing and working with her, she has become a dear friend who I love and admire very much. At the beginning of Jewel’s first wedding season with me, she starting telling me about this ultra good looking guy that she had been on a few dates with. It was immediately comfortable and fun. And as time unfolded, she saw his incredible character and heart.
I told Greg and Jewel last night as we watched their slideshow for the first time, that looking at these pictures, I realized how much they share not only similar features, but similar gestures, mannerisms, passions, convictions. If there is such a thing as soul mates, they are it. These two have a passion for marriage and what a serious thing it is to be woven together and committed to another person for life. I think it’s so beautiful, that while they take this relationship so seriously, they also have met someone that they are incredibly excited to share life with. I could write pages, but instead, I will let you have a peek into who they are and what happened on the day they got married. Love you guys more than I can say!
Here is the whole slideshow. For more of my personal favorites, click below for the rest of the blog post.

Jewel started keeping a journal written about and for Greg early in their dating relationship. Here greg reads it for the first time. Photo by Mike Varel.

One of the most powerful story elements of the day actually came out of a really traumatic incident that had happened late the night before. Greg’s mom was carrying a box of glass vases to the car after the rehearsal dinner, and she slipped, colliding with the box of shattered vases when she hit the ground. Greg ran outside to her, ripped off his shirt, quickly tied it around his mom’s arm as she laid there faint from the loss of so much blood. With complete adeptness and care, he got his mom to the emergency room. Jewel and Greg were there, the night before the wedding, sitting by her side until 1 am. This was totally in character for Greg to care for his mom like this, and just before the ceremony, Greg’s mom looked Jewel in the eyes and said that she knew Greg would care for her that way too in their life together. Here is a moment shared by Greg and his mom, photographed by Mike.

Jewel and her dad were alone just before the ceremony. They emotional moments hugging, and there was a point where the room was just filled with this indescribable tension of love and what it is for a father to give his daughter away in marriage.

Mike’s photo below

These two love novelty cameras, so I brought my SX-70 to play with, and here Greg shoots a portrait of his lovely wife.

I love the slideshow of images filled with such emotion, combined with music & audio from your ceremony. One of my favorite moments is the part where your officiant describes you both as ‘engaging’. So right on! Jewel, even though we only had the privlige to meet with you a few times to help you choose accessories for your wedding day, it is true–you seem to be always in the moment! I can only imagine that you’ve chosen to spend your life with someone who is just as incredible!(And yes, we did track you down here! ~ Aundrea & Erin, IE: girls in mid-town who helped you with your wedding flower
Of course, speechless photos, Becca & Mike!
